OBJECTIVE: Calcifying vascular cells in human atherosclerotic plaques actively contribute to ectopic vascular mineralization. Lyso-phosphatidylcholine (LPC), a product of oxidized phosphatidylcholine hydrolysis, is found at concentrations of 1-12 microg/g tissue throughout the atheroma.
