The amyloid-beta (Abeta) peptide, widely known as the causative molecule of Alzheimer disease (AD), is generated by the sequential cleavage of amyloid precursor protein (APP) by the aspartyl proteases BACE1/beta-secretase and presenilin/gamma-secretase.
