Thy-1 antigen is anchored in the cell membrane by glycophosphatidyl inositol linkages instead of hydrophobic protein domains. The hydrophobic portion of Thy-1 antigen is cleaved by putative "transamidase." Mutated genes were constructed by using site-directed mutagenesis.
