Airway inflammation and mucus hypersecretion/overproduction/obstruction are pathophysiological characteristics of cystic fibrosis, asthma, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Up-regulation of airway mucin genes by inflammatory/immune response mediators is one of the major contributors to mucin overproduction.
