Selective synthesis and release of FSH from pituitary gonadotropes is regulated by activins. Activins directly stimulate murine FSHbeta (Fshb) subunit gene transcription through a consensus 8-bp Sma- and Mad-related protein-binding element (SBE) in the proximal promoter.
