The heparan sulfate proteoglycan syndecan-1 (Sdc1) modulates cell proliferation, adhesion, migration and angiogenesis. Proteinase-mediated shedding converts Sdc1 from a membrane-bound coreceptor into a soluble effector capable of binding the same ligands.
