Ubiquitin-dependent proteolysis is an important mechanism that suppresses the beta-catenin transcription factor in cells without Wnt stimulation. A critical step in this regulatory pathway is to create a SCF(beta-TrCP) E3 ubiquitin ligase binding site for beta-catenin.
