Bilobalide, a major bioactive component of Ginkgo biloba herbal extracts, exhibits neuroprotective and anti-ischaemic activity. However, its therapeutic potential is limited because of its instability. Attempts to synthesise a more stable analogue culminated in the development of NV-31.
