OBJECTIVES: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is characterized by chronic recurrent mucosal inflammation. Genetic studies in UC have indicated linkage to chromosome 6 in the region of the tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) gene, a potent proinflammatory cytokine.
