In humans, congenital deficiency of the enzyme hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyltransferase (HPRT) results in a disorder known as the Lesch-Nyhan syndrome. Patients with this disorder exhibit a prominent neurobehavioral phenotype that results in part from dysfunction of catecholaminergic systems in the striatum.
