Mannose-binding lectin (MBL) mediates activation of the complement system via the lectin pathway. Two forms of MBL, MBL-A and MBL-C, were characterized in rodents, rabbits, bovine and rhesus monkeys, whereas only one form was identified in humans, chimpanzees and chickens.
