Trypanosomatid parasites share a gene expression mode which differs greatly from that of their human and insect hosts. In these unicellular eukaryotes, protein-coding genes are transcribed polycistronically and individual mRNAs are processed from precursors by spliced leader (SL) trans splicing and polyadenylation.
