Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) inactivates dopamine, epinephrine and norepinephrine in the nervous system. A common functional polymorphism (Val158Met) leads to a three- to-four-fold variation in the COMT enzyme activity, the Met form displaying lower enzymatic activity.
