Hypoxia-inducible factors, key transcription factors for hypoxia-dependent gene expression, play important roles in angiogenesis and tumor growth. The VHL protein binds to the alpha subunit of (HIF-alpha) for its oxygen-dependent degradation. VHL mutations are found frequently in sporadic RCC.
