Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) contributes to normal tissue patterning and carcinoma invasiveness. We show that transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta/activin members, but not bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) members, can induce EMT in normal human and mouse epithelial cells.
