BACKGROUND: The renal 11beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2 (11beta HSD2) enzyme inactivates 11-hydroxy steroids in the kidney, thereby protecting the nonselective mineralocorticoid (MR) receptor from occupation by glucocorticoids.
