Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is characterized by thrombocytopenia and microangiopathic hemolysis. Unlike the typical hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), which follows infection with shiga toxin-producing microorganisms, most cases of TTP do not have an obvious etiology.
