Rotavirus, a cause of severe gastroenteritis, contains a segmented double-stranded (ds)RNA genome that replicates using viral mRNAs as templates. The highly conserved 3'-consensus sequence (3'CS), UGUGACC, of the mRNAs promotes dsRNA synthesis and enhances translation.
