ATP-binding cassette transporter A1 (ABCA1) mediates transport of cellular cholesterol and phospholipids to high density lipoprotein (HDL) apolipoproteins, such as apoA-I. ABCA1 mutations can cause a severe HDL deficiency and atherosclerosis.
