Vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC) in mature, normal blood vessels exhibit a differentiated, quiescent, contractile morphology, but injury induces a phenotypic modulation toward a proliferative, dedifferentiated, migratory phenotype with upregulated extracellular matrix protein synthesis (synthetic phenotype), which contributes to intimal hyperplasia.
