Mutations of the mismatch repair (MMR) genes MLH1 and MSH2 are associated with hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC), a highly penetrant autosomal dominant condition characterized by hypermutability of short tandemly repeated sequences in tumor DNA.
