Hyperimmunization with chondroitin sulfate-depleted fetal human cartilage proteoglycan (HFPG) leads to the development of peripheral arthritis and spondylitis in BALB/c mice. Chondroitin-sulfate-depleted adult human cartilage proteoglycan (HAPG) is much less effective at inducing arthritis.
