OBJECTIVES: Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) promotes angiogenesis, mediates vascular permeability, and activates and recruits monocytes. VEGF is produced in activated alveolar macrophages, in epithelioid cells, and in multinuclear giant cells of pulmonary sarcoid granulomas.
