The human mast cell line (HMC)-1 cell line is growth-factor independent because of a constitutive activity of the receptor tyrosine kinase Kit. Such deregulated Kit activity has also been suggested causative in gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GISTs) and mastocytosis.
