Recent studies of Tangier disease have shown that the ATP-binding cassette transporter A1 (ABCA1)/apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I) interaction is critical for high density lipoprotein particle formation, apoA-I integrity, and proper reverse cholesterol transport.
