In eukaryotic cells, environmental stress signals are transmitted by evolutionarily conserved MAPKs, such as Hog1 in the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Spc1 in the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe and p38/JNK in mammalian cells.
