BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The etiology of arterial ischemic stroke (AIS) in the young remains unknown in one third of patients. Serum paraoxonase (PON1) is an HDL-associated esterase that hydrolyzes products of lipid peroxidation and prevents the oxidation of LDL.
