Ferrochelatase, the last enzyme of the heme biosynthetic pathway, has for years been considered to be active as a monomer. The crystal structure of Bacillus subtilis ferrochelatase confirmed its monomeric structure. However, animal ferrochelatase was found to form a functional dimer.
