BACKGROUND: A Guam variant of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS-G) and parkinsonism dementia complex (PDC-G) are found in the Chamorro people of Guam. Both disorders have overlapping neuropathologic findings, with neurofibrillary tangles in spinal cord and brain.
