Inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) plays an important role in host defense. Macrophages expressing iNOS release the reactive nitrogen intermediates (RNI) nitrite and S-nitrosoglutathione (GSNO), which are bactericidal in vitro at a pH characteristic of the phagosome of activated macrophages.
