Polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs) are essential in host defense against periodontopathic bacteria such as Porphyromonas gingivalis. The uptake of immunoglobulin G (IgG)-opsonized bacteria via IgG Fc receptors (Fc gamma R) on PMN constitutes a central defense mechanism in periodontium.
