Thiopurine methyltransferase (TPMT) catalyses the S-methylation of thiopurines, including 6-mercaptopurine and 6-thioguanine. TPMT activity exhibits genetic polymorphism, with about 1/300 inheriting TPMT deficiency as an autosomal recessive trait.
