Most species of African trypanosomes cannot infect humans due to the presence in our blood of trypanolytic factors (TLFs). These lipoprotein particles contain the apolipoprotein L1 (ApoLI) toxin which, when internalised by trypanosomes, forms pores and causes cell death.
