Hepatic steatosis is defined by accumulation of neutral lipids in lipid droplets (LDs) including triacylglycerol (TG) and steryl esters. Two distinct diacylglycerol acyltransferases (DGAT1 and DGAT2) catalyze synthesis of TG in hepatocytes.
