Elevated mutation rate is a hallmark of mismatch repair (MMR) deficient cells and tumours. This includes microsatellite instability (MSI), which is caused by insertions and deletions in mono-and dinucleotide repeats. MSI rates, however, are highly variable across MMR-deficient tumours.
