Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by a progressive loss of nigrostriatal dopaminergic neurons. Non-dopaminergic neurotransmission is also impaired. Intraneuronal Lewy bodies, the pathological hallmark of PD, have been observed in serotoninergic, noradrenergic, and cholinergic neurons.
