During phenylalanine catabolism, phenylacetic acid (PAA) is converted to phenylacetyl-CoA (PAA-CoA) by a ligase, PaaK, and then epoxidized by a multicomponent monooxygenase, PaaABCDE, before further degradation to the TCA cycle.
