Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV) and Heartland virus (HRTV) are emerging tick-borne bandaviruses. They have high case fatality rates (10%), and no FDA-approved vaccines exist for disease prevention. SFTSV and HRTV are therefore identified as priority pathogens.
