Primary cilia dysfunction underlies a group of severe disorders known as ciliopathies. These include Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS), which is caused by mutations in BBS genes encoding for components of ciliary protein complexes essential for the assembly and maintenance of primary cilia.
