The PEX1/PEX6 AAA-ATPase is required for the biogenesis and maintenance of peroxisomes. Mutations in HsPEX1 and HsPEX6 disrupt peroxisomal matrix protein import and are the leading cause of Peroxisome Biogenesis Disorders (PBDs).
