The recent observation that mutations in cytosolic CuZn-superoxide dismutase (CuZn-SOD) are associated with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) suggests that the disease arises from a perturbation of the homeostasis of free radicals resulting in neuronal degeneration by reactive oxygen species.
