BACKGROUND: The RNA polymerase core enzyme of Escherichia coli is assembled in the sequence alpha--> alpha 2-->alpha 2 beta-->alpha 2 beta beta'. The amino-terminal domain down to residue 235 of the Escherichia coli RNA polymerase alpha subunit plays a key role in enzyme assembly.
