Agouti and extension are two genes that control the production of yellow-red (phaeomelanin) and brown-black (eumelanin) pigments in the mammalian coat. Extension encodes the melanocyte-stimulating hormone receptor (MC1R) while agouti encodes a peptide antagonist of the receptor.
