There are two distinct lineages of T cells: T-cell receptor (TCR) alphabeta-bearing cells (alphabeta T cells) and TCR gammadelta-bearing cells (gammadelta T cells). All of the alphabeta T cells and most subsets of gammadelta T cells develop in the thymus.
