Defective DNA mismatch repair in neoplasia is manifested by extra, aberrant bands within multiple microsatellite markers. The replication error (RER) phenotype is present in most colorectal and endometrial carcinomas in patients with the hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal carcinoma syndrome.
