We have discovered a new member of the class of genes controlling embryonic dorsoventral patterning. Mutants of the thick veins (tkv) gene have been described previously (as slater alleles) as embryonic lethal, lacking dorsal epidermis, but not as showing a recognizable dorsoventral phenotype.
