BACKGROUND: Thiopurine methyltransferase (TPMT) is one of three major enzymes involved in the metabolism of azathioprine and its active metabolite 6-mercaptopurine. Thiopurine methyltransferase activity is determined by an allelic polymorphism for either high (TPMTH) or low (TPMTL) enzyme activity.
