Mutations at the murine steel (Sl) locus encoding the ligand for the c-kit receptor result in defects in gametogenesis, hematopoiesis, and melanogenesis. Steel Panda (Slpan) is an allele at the Sl locus obtained by an X-ray mutagenesis protocol.
