Schizophrenia is a severe neurodevelopmental disorder whose etiology remains incompletely understood. Epidemiological studies of the Dutch Hunger Winter demonstrated that maternal famine during early gestation increased the risk of schizophrenia in offspring, implicating the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) framework.
