β-Lactamases confer bacterial resistance by hydrolyzing β-lactam antibiotics. Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemases (KPCs) are a major cause of resistance to carbapenems, but combinations of β-lactams with β-lactamase inhibitors, such as ceftazidime/avibactam, initially restored activity against these enzymes.
